Regain Your Independence The Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Program at MCCH is dedicated to helping patients pass the hurdles of recovery and back to their lives, work, and family. We are committed to providing the care necessary to meet physical, psychological and social needs while promoting well-being and independence.

About Our Program

The Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is a 12-bed inpatient program located on the 4th floor within Murray-Calloway County Hospital. The unit provides a full range of rehabilitation therapies on site. Besides patient rooms, there is a therapy gym, kitchen, bathroom and washer/dryer for patients to practice taking care of themselves before they actually return home. The interdisciplinary team develops an individualized treatment plan to help the patient become as independent as possible with the activities of daily living, including mobility and homemaking skills, and facilitate re-entry into the home and community. The patient will receive a minimum of 3 hours of therapy per day for 5 days per week.

• Rehabilitation Nursing – helps patients become more independent by assisting them to “do for themselves,” practicing techniques they learn in therapy
• Physical Therapy – helps strengthen muscles, increase endurance, improve balance, and improve mobility
• Occupational Therapy – focuses on activities to help patients can for themselves and improve motor coordination
• Speech Therapy – identifies and assists in treating communication and swallowing disorders
• Social Work– coordinates care conferences with patients and their families to assist with discharge planning for supportive services needed
• Psychology, respiratory therapy, clinical nutrition, vocational rehab, audiology, and others as needed

• Polyarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Brain injury
• Neurological Conditions
• Spinal Cord Injuries
• Amputations
• Major Multiple Trauma
• Burns
• Congenital Deformities
• Other debilitating conditions resulting in loss of independence in self-care and mobility

Program Criteria

• Adult, age 18 or older
• Patient has the potential to improve functional abilities
• Patient is medically stable
• Patient requires at least two therapies and has the potential to participate in a minimum of three hours of therapy per day
• Patient is motivated to participate in the rehab program
• Patient has sufficient mental alterness to participate in the program
• Patient and family have identified a plan for discharge
• Patient requires interdisciplinary team intervention with medical supervision by a physician specializing in the provision of physical medicine and rehab with 24-hour nursing care

Referrals

If you believe a person may benefit from our services, please give us a call at (270) 762-1429. A member of our staff will perform an assessment at no charge. Patients and their families may also ask their physician or hospital social worker to initiate a referral.

Our Specialists

Monte Rommelman, MD

Physiatry

Dr. Rommelman is the Medical Director of the Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at Murray-Calloway County Hospital. He is from Paducah, KY, and completed his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and finished his residency at the University of Kentucky in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Dr. Rommelman is also Board Certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. In addition to his many accolades, Dr. Rommelman has been active in organizations such as the American Medical Association, the Southern Society of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, a Fellow of the American Academy of PM&R, as well as a member of the Kentucky and Southern Medical Association.
