Are DACA Recipients Eligible for Student Stimulus Checks?

The federal government has approved and is sending stimulus checks to millions of individuals in an effort to revitalize the economy that has been devastated by the coronavirus outbreak. Many college students are facing the loss of pre-paid dormitory living quarters, loss of part-time jobs and extra expenses to find alternative living quarters. The government allocated $6.3 to provide aid to college students in need through the CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act).

On Tuesday, April 21, the government announced that many students will not qualify for CARES funds. Students who are ineligible for federal student aid will not receive stimulus checks, including:

• Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients

According to the Education Department, the students are barred from receiving the aid because it is intended for U.S. citizens.
